Hi there! A few important dates are coming up! Our annual Jazz Auction Info packages just went home this week, so please check for a large envelope! Items are due on January 31st, to allow for sorting and labelling time before the auction.

Our 20th Annual Sweet Sounds Jazz Auction and Coffeehouse is on Thursday, February 9th at 7:00 p.m. at Greenall High School. Please feel free to come out and enjoy the sounds of the various jazz bands in our school areas and a dessert! We’ll have many great items up for auction. This is our largest yearly fundraiser, so please mark it on your calendars!

We have a few important dates coming up in November. We have a couple of ALL SCHOOLS Lunch Band rehearsals coming up for our Grade 6 and 7 students at McLean and Pilot Butte!

Grade 7 – Wednesday, November 9th (Grade 7 PBS + Grade 7/8 McLean)

Grade 6 – Monday, November 14th (Pilot Butte + McLean)

Also, our Grade 7 Saskatoon trip forms are due on Wednesday, November 9th! Please remember that your BPEMPA registration fees must be paid in order for your child to attend our trips. Click here for the 2011-12 Registration Form.

We’ll be putting November and December calendars together, so you’ll be getting both towards the end of November!

Just a quick reminder: When the calendar mentions “Grade 6 Full Band” that refers to White City students ONLY. When we’re going to have a lunch rehearsal with McLean and Pilot Butte as well, the calendar will say, “Grade 6 Full Band ALL SCHOOLS”. This applies to Grade 7 and 8 rehearsals as well!

We’re back for another year! Please ensure you check with your students this week, as many important bits of information will be going home. I’ll be attaching them here as well as they pop up.

Grade 6 and 7 Headstart runs from Tuesday, September 13th to Thursday, September 15th (3 nights!) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. each evening at Balgonie Elementary School. Please try to attend ALL of the program, as this is a crucial part of our learning in Grade 6 Band!

BPEMPA Registration Forms are also available if you need another copy. Please click, download, fill it in and send it back to school with your student! These forms are due NO LATER than October 31st. The earlier the better, so we can keep you informed of concert dates, fundraisers, etc. Students WILL NOT be permitted to travel on BPEMPA subsidized trips without a completed and paid registration form.

Jazz Auction

There is a Letter to Parents regarding the auction itself, a letter that can be provided to sponsors and business soliciting donations and a form to be returned to the school with any donated items.

Some neat online music tools!

Here are some really interesting ways to make great sounding music online!

Tone Matrix – This is a matrix based on a pentatonic scale. Every time you click on a box, it activates that tone. The tones play from left to right. You can keep adding and removing tones to create an interesting beat!

Pulsate – This is a more random tool! You create circles that expand and contract. As they bump into one another, you get some pentatonic sounds. With enough circles, it should sound like musical rain!

Tone Wheels - You can drag around the turning wheels and the tones to create an interesting combination of sounds.

Audiotool – For something a lot more complicated, but very cool for designing your own beats, you can check out Audiotool. This online software has various drum machines, synthesizers and pedals, but it will take some experimentation to figure out!

Fundraising Info

We’ve begun our first two fundraisers of the year! We’re going to be selling boxes of BC Apples and our annual LaMontagne fundraiser. LaMontagne sells Christmas gifts, wrapping paper, chocolate and jewellery. There are lots of great gifts that will arrive just in time for Christmas. You can check out their website here.

The BC Apple fundraiser forms are going to be due on October 5th.

The LaMontagne Orders are going to be due on October 20th.

You can expect to receive your fundraising packages NO LATER than September 24th! If you haven’t received it by that date, please check with your student or email Mr. Popoff!
